How do you make a green product greener? By using green energy.

In 2006, UCI was the first copper wire manufacturer in the Western Hemisphere to introduce lead-free jacketing. We’re pleased that the rest of the industry has caught up with us but we have to crow a little about our energy supplier, the City of Denton, Texas.

windmill_picIn May of 2009, Denton entered into an agreement with NextEra, the largest generator of wind and solar power in the Northern Hemisphere. Fully 40% of Denton’s energy—60 megawatts—now comes from the Wolf Ridge wind farm in nearby Cooke County.

Denton also supplies its customers with an additional 1.6 megawatts in natural energy derived from a bioreactor that traps and transforms methane gas emitted from the Denton County landfill. Compared to Wolf Ridge, that doesn’t sound like much, but it’s actually enough to power 1600 homes.

People have been using copper for more than 10,000 years. Ninety percent of the copper ever mined is still in use! Copper is the ultimate recyclable, just melt and repurpose.

Thanks, Denton, for helping us make a green product a little greener!
